Debian Trixie and the New deb822 Format for APT Sources

Introduction

Since February 2025, Debian 13 (Trixie) and APT introduced the deb822 format for managing APT sources. This new format replaces the traditional /etc/apt/sources.list file with the more structured and readable /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources file.

This change was introduced by APT, starting with an update that enabled users to run:

apt modernize-sources

This command automatically converts the old sources.list format to the new deb822 format.

A tutorial to use GUI in WSL2/WSLg replacing original Xorg by Xwayland, allowing WSL to work like native Linux, including login screen

Full desktop shell in WSL2 using WSLg (XWayland)

Note

If you want to use Wayland in WSLg in a simpler setup, you can try the WSLg (Wayland) tutorial.

In this tutorial, we will setup GUI in WSL2. No additional software outside WSL (like VcXsrv or GWSL) is required. You will find this tutorial very similar to the one that replaces Xorg with Xvnc. Indeed, it's pretty much the same tutorial, with some few changes.

The key component we need to install is the desktop metapackage you want (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Budgie, etc), and after that, replace the default Xorg by a script that calls Xwayland instead.

For this setup, I will use Ubuntu 24.04, and install GNOME Desktop. Unfortunately older versions of Ubuntu lack some fundamental things, so we cannot reproduce it in older versions (at least not fully). Since the key components aren't bound to Ubuntu or GNOME, you can use your favorite distro and GUI. Check the [Sample screenshot

Run a systemd container using cgroupv2

Run a systemd container using cgroupv2 [NOTES]

In theory this would allow the nested systemd init to manage its own resources via slices and scopes - kind of like with LXC's nested mode but without the nasty security implication of bind mounting the real cgroupfs into the container.

Running a systemd container is not the only thing that this would enable - together with fuse-overlayfs it might allow one to run containers inside containers more securely.

The problem is that by default the nested group is mounted ro into the container which should not be necessary according to my research. It gets mounted rw as expected when userns-remap is enabled in Docker what is not desirable for me. I am not sure if docker/moby/containerd is at fault here or if it's a limitation of Linux control groups or user namespaces. It would be great if som

This tutorial shows how to run docker natively on Android, without VMs and chroot.

Docker on Android 🐋📱

Edit 🎉

All packages, except for Tini have been added to termux-root. To install them, simply pkg install root-repo && pkg install docker. This will install the whole docker suite, left only Tini to be compiled manually.

Guide to Compile an Android Kernel with Clang

Android Kernel Compilation Guide

This gist is intended to assist beginners, like myself, in getting started with Android Kernel Compilation. Please note that while I'm sharing my setup and process, this guide may not be entirely accurate, and I welcome suggestions from experienced developers to improve it.

Installing Build Tools

I am on Arch, so I will be using pacman to install the base-devel package group.

sudo pacman -S base-devel

On a Debian based distro, you can use apt and install the build-essential package.

Build a 64bit Debian OS for the Raspberry Pi using Debootstrap

Introduction

The objective of these instructions is to create a complete Arm64 OS (Userland and Kernel) using Debian Debootstrap and RPI-Update for use on the Raspberry Pi 3 and 4.

Prerequisites:

  • An existing Debian/Raspbian system (any architecture will do)
  • An empty SD card formatted as per a standard Raspbian installation mounted to /mnt/sd on the build system
    • 1st Partition 0-256MB = FAT32 (Mount to /mnt/sd/boot)
    • 2nd Partition 256MB+ = EXT4 (Mount to /mnt/sd)

nginx TLS SNI routing, based on subdomain pattern

Nginx TLS SNI routing, based on subdomain pattern

Nginx can be configured to route to a backend, based on the server's domain name, which is included in the SSL/TLS handshake (Server Name Indication, SNI).
This works for http upstream servers, but also for other protocols, that can be secured with TLS.

prerequisites

  • at least nginx 1.15.9 to use variables in ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key.
  • check nginx -V for the following:
    ...
    TLS SNI support enabled
