1. When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

In the past I have utilized a variety of management tools to keep myself organized. In my previous career in recruitment I leaned heavily on CRMs and became proficient in pipelining. I have also found success using time blocking and handwritten daily and weekly calendaring. Here at Turing, I might find success using these same techniques for the wide variety of assignments and community activities that I will patriciate in. I should also continue pipelining throughout my time here for job prospecting.

2. As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

I know that my grit is my greatest strength and it should serve me well here! I have rarely given up on something that I’ve truly cared about and this program/my future career is of the greatest importance to me. I am so excited and certain that this is a path that is best suited for me and that sense of assurance will not allow me to give up, regardless of the obstacles that I’ll face along the way.

3. Describe how you work best (conditions, environment, preferences, etc.):

I work best in my own home environment or any place where I have few distractions. I’m starting to feel more comfortable as I grow in larger group settings and would like to have more exposure to this to continue building that comfort. Conditionally, I have the most success when I have little time to do much else than my work. I’ve always excelled in roles that require 60+ hours a week and a ton of output; my personal life allows for it and I enjoy it so I don’t see an issue sans the lack of sleep! I was granted reasonable accommodations in college for testing and did find that time and a half plus a room to myself drastically improved my grades, however I’ve been torn on the right move to make in that regard here. I do know that most interviews are timed, and I think it would be best practice to move forward under normal time constraints to prepare for this.

4. As you start this new career, what is your greatest area of improvement when it comes to your professional skills?

I have a massive issue in asking for help. I understand that this is something that is a point that would need improvement on regardless of the field that I go into, however I do see it being terribly important while in the program virtually. There are so many things that aren’t as easy to pick up on when learning in an online format, added onto the fast pace of the program, asking for help when needed is absolutely necessary for my success here at Turing.

5. How will developing a deeper understanding of your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

I will make sure to reflects on gains and losses and the “Why’s” for each of these. Along with this, I will catalogue on my strengths as I gain them and areas of improvement and my “How’s” for each of these. I think having a bigger overview will allow me to pinpoint more specific areas as I grow, as I’ll be able to identify more common issues that come up for me while at Turing and in my career.

6. Describe the vision you currently have for your career after Turing:

I would hope to find a role within a company whose mission and culture has common morals and ideals as my own. Being a hobbyist in Geology and earth science, I would love to find a role within the Environmental sector outside of GIS. I’ve also utilized the client facing side of Salesforce and have definitely benefited from it; however, I do have mixed feelings about entering a role that’s not with a startup or mid-level company based off of my experiences at Aerotek and Adecco. As appealing as fully remote sounds, I would like to take on an in-person role (if that will be possible with so many unknowns on the table) while getting my footing. After this, I would absolutely love to work in a fully remote role if given the opportunity! For me, my “Why” is continuing my own personal growth and building happiness for myself. Location over income is definitely my preference - my home is in the mountains and I would love to get back there someday!
