macOS 10.12 Sierra Setup

macOS 10.12 Sierra Setup

Custom recipe to get macOS 10.12 Sierra running from scratch, setup applications and developer environment. This is very similar (and currently mostly the same) as my 10.11 El Capitan setup recipe and 10.10 Yosemite setup recipe. I am currently tweaking this for 10.12 Sierra and expect to refine this gist over the next few weeks.

I use this gist to keep track of the important software and steps required to have a functioning system after a semi-annual fresh install. I generally reinstall each computer from scratch every 6 months, and I do not perform upgrades between releases.

This keeps the system performing at top speeds, clean of trojans, spyware, and ensures that I maintain good organizational practices for my content and backups. I highly recommend this.

You are encouraged to fork this and modify it to your heart's content to match your o

Comparing two ways to load non-critical CSS

I wanted to figure out the fastest way to load non-critical CSS so that the impact on initial page drawing is minimal.

TL;DR: Here's the solution I ended up with: https://github.com/filamentgroup/loadCSS/

For async JavaScript file requests, we have the async attribute to make this easy, but CSS file requests have no similar standard mechanism (at least, none that will still apply the CSS after loading - here are some async CSS loading conditions that do apply when CSS is inapplicable to media: https://gist.github.com/igrigorik/2935269#file-notes-md ).

Seems there are a couple ways to load and apply a CSS file in a non-blocking manner:

AngularJS 1.2.0 lazy load script in partials

* Let angular load and execute lazy javascript from partials!

* This module is the result of this issue: "1.2.0rc1 regression: script tags not loaded via ngInclude"
* Issue url: https://github.com/angular/angular.js/issues/3756
*
* As of Angular 1.2.0 the ngInclude scripts does not permit execution of javascript from included partials.
* This little module execute code inside script tags with "javascript-lazy" attribute after partial loading,

# the admin password for all of the IE VMs is “Password1″ without the quotes, it's also used for the password hints
1) Install VirtuaBox on your mac
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.10/VirtualBox-4.1.10-76795-OSX.dmg
2) Decide which versions of Internet Explorer you want to download and install – each version of Internet Explorer is contained within a separate virtual machine that runs within VirtualBox. In other words, if you want to run Internet Explorer 7, 8, and 9, you will need to download three separate VM’s, which may take a while so keep that in mind. Select the text below and copy it:
# Install ALL versions of Internet Explorer: IE 7, IE 8, and IE 9 (for now this script will also pull down a IE 6 vm with windows xp)

Pure CSS fix to iOS zoom bug on device rotation

My approach to fix the iOS bug is documented here:

https://github.com/sergiolopes/ios-zoom-bug-fix

Here I present one experiment with a pure CSS solution, no JS required. It uses width=device-width normally (no device-height hacking) and scales down the page on landscape.

Works fine on all iOS versions.

There's only one problem: on old iOS versions (prior to 4.3.5), the page will get a big empty space at bottom, below the content, when on landscape. Recent iOS versions don't show this behavior.
