GILBERT: He named the meeting twice.

NORBERT: That means it is strategic.

Q&A — Background Lore of the Office That Keeps Going

❓ What feels like the real subject of the scene, underneath the office satire?

It doesn’t really feel like it’s “about AI” in the narrow sense. The AI Committee is more like the current costume of a much older problem: people being asked to trust systems they can’t really inspect, while still somehow acting as if they remain responsible.

Both objects are funny because they’re office absurdities. But they also suggest a subtler process: institutions often make things real by surrounding them with signs of reality.

A cake celebrating adoption before adoption exists. A system that “improves with usage” and food that just keeps getting reheated.

“The future has already happened” sounds like a joke about the prepaid cake and boxes, but it also captures how institutions often present outcomes as already decided, leaving people to inhabit them after the fact.

“Most office knowledge is ritual with electricity” is funny, but it also quietly expands the story beyond AI. It suggests that a lot of supposedly modern work already runs on inherited gestures that no one can fully justify.

“By next month people will have tips” is another one. It implies that once a system resists explanation, a folklore forms around it. Not real understanding, but a culture of coping. That may be one of the most revealing ideas in the whole piece.

And then there’s “It looked right long enough.” That’s near the end, and it probably lands hardest. It sounds casual, but it almost rewrites the entire scene in one sentence.

Probably not one clean message.
