Things I believe

Things I believe

This is a collection of the things I believe about software development. I have worked for years building backend and data processing systems, so read the below within that context.

Agree? Disagree? Feel free to let me know at @JanStette.

Fundamentals

Keep it simple, stupid. You ain't gonna need it.

Creating a PEX from a python script

So you want to create a pex that packages your script and its dependencies?

Ok - first to make our script! Call it foo.py:

import requests

if __name__ == '__main__':
  req = requests.get("https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pantsbuild/pex/master/README.rst")
  print req.text.split("\n")[0]

A short tutorial on how to use Vault in your Ansible workflow. Ansible-vault allows you to more safely store sensitive information in a source code repository or on disk.

Working with ansible-vault

I've been using a lot of Ansible lately and while almost everything has been great, finding a clean way to implement ansible-vault wasn't immediately apparent.

What I decided on was the following: put your secret information into a vars file, reference that vars file from your task, and encrypt the whole vars file using ansible-vault encrypt.

Let's use an example: You're writing an Ansible role and want to encrypt the spoiler for the movie Aliens.

Generating Random MAC Addresses with Python

The mini-tool has a CLI-Interface with the following options:

  • Unicast or Multicast? Default: Unicast
  • Locally Administered or Globally Unique? Default: Locally Administered
  • Prescribe specific OUI (overwrites the above two)

TODO

  • Add an option to generate a number of MACs without collisions.
