How to deploy a static website to Heroku

Gist

This is a quick tutorial explaining how to get a static website hosted on Heroku.

Why do this?

Heroku hosts apps on the internet, not static websites. To get it to run your static portfolio, personal blog, etc., you need to trick Heroku into thinking your website is a PHP app. This 6-step tutorial will teach you how.

NOTES:
The PCRE engine (Perl Compatible Regular Expressions) is what BBEdit and TextWrangler use.
Items I'm unsure of are marked '# PCRE?'. The list while fairly comprehensive is not complete.

Shell script for converting a batch of *.md files into *.rst using pandoc.
# This script was created to convert a directory full
# of markdown files into rst equivalents. It uses
# pandoc to do the conversion.
#
# 1. Install pandoc from http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/
# 2. Copy this script into the directory containing the .md files
# 3. Ensure that the script has execute permissions
# 4. Run the script
#
# By default this will keep the original .md file
