Running Tailscale on Ubiquiti USG

You will need ssh access to your USG. I suggest running sudo su so you're the root user throughout

Installation

  1. Download tailscale and put the files in /config/. Find the latest stable or unstable version for your USG's processor.
curl https://pkgs.tailscale.com/stable/tailscale_1.36.1_mips64.tgz | tar xvz -C /tmp
mv /tmp/tailscale_1.36.1_mips64 /config/tailscale

Docker migrate to overlay2 from aufs script

Docker migrate to overlay2 from aufs script

Crazy that this is pretty much forced change without proper transition script

note. Based on https://www.sylvaincoudeville.fr/2019/12/docker-migrer-le-stockage-aufs-vers-overlay2/ NOT WORKING!!!! IF FOLLOWING THE ABOVE.. SOMEHOW THE CONTAINERS DO NOT RE-APPEAR!

The only way I found that is somewhat automated is the the docker-compose way..

Which is still not 100% and require manual fixing of stupid errors of the docker-compose tool (mainly things that ere not interpreted right, like dates & userIds that need to manually surrounded by quotes etc)

Adding tailscale to an EdgeRouter (and surviving system upgrades)

I suggest you run sudo bash on all of these so you're the root user.

Installing

  1. Download tailscale and put the files in /config/. Find the latest stable or unstable version for your EdgeRouter's processor (ex. ER4 is mips and ERX is mipself)

Create a private fork of a public repository

The repository for the assignment is public and Github does not allow the creation of private forks for public repositories.

The correct way of creating a private frok by duplicating the repo is documented here.

For this assignment the commands are:

  1. Create a bare clone of the repository. (This is temporary and will be removed so just do it wherever.)

git clone --bare git@github.com:usi-systems/easytrace.git

List of things for hardening Ubuntu

WARNING

May contain out of date information. Check the comments below!

The list of actions listed below was taken mostly from Book Of Zeus with minor modifications and did the job well for Ubuntu version, which was available at that moment (May 2016). This gist was created for internal use and was never meant to be discovered by the web, although Google managed to find and index this page, which was a great surprise for me. Please check the original source for the updated information (links are provided in most of the sections), and read the comments below: they provide more details about the usage experience.

System Updates

Keeping the system updated is vital before starting anything on your system. This will prevent people to use known vulnerabilities to enter in your system.

System Design Cheatsheet

System Design Cheatsheet

Picking the right architecture = Picking the right battles + Managing trade-offs

Basic Steps

  1. Clarify and agree on the scope of the system
  • User cases (description of sequences of events that, taken together, lead to a system doing something useful)
    • Who is going to use it?
    • How are they going to use it?
