Windows development in 2018: Setting up a coding environment using Windows Subsystems for Linux (WSL), Hyper, and Visual Studio Code (vscode) with Python.

If you're here just for the section on vscode working with Python on WSL, jump here.

Creating a modern development environment in Windows

Windows is now a development environment that can compete with Mac and Linux. Windows Subsystems for Linux lets you have an Ubuntu (or other Linux flavor) installation that works near seemlessly inside of Windows. Hyper Terminal running WSL's Bash and Visual Studio Code feel really nice to code in. These are instructions for getting set up and smoothing out most of the remaining rough edges. I've included a section on getting vscode to work well with Python and WSL, but the general pattern should be usable for any unsupported language (as of now, I believe it's only Node.js that has WSL support in vscode).

Guide to installing GalliumOS on an Acer Chromebook 14" (CB3-431) 'Edgar'

GalliumOS on Edgar

This document sets out how I installed GalliumOS 2.1 on a new Acer Chromebook 14" (CB3-431) 'Edgar' in April 2017. I installed GalliumOS on the internal eMMC storage, but left Chrome OS in place (allowing dual-booting).

It is meant to be an easy-to-follow and particularly thorough (if repetitive) guide, but I make no warranty that it will work correctly for you. It will wipe all data on your Edgar.

I have tried to provide references for each section; see the GalliumOS wiki guide to chrx installation for an overview of the general process.

⚠ Caution: There have been reports of Edgars' speakers overheating, due to a malfunction of the audio hardware, when booted into anything other than Chrome OS. I have not experienced this, and it seems to be believed that this will not now occur under GalliumOS. More information can be found in the comments for the [GalliumOS Braswell Platform Validation

Ubuntu setup with NGINX http/2 and letsencrypt

Intro

This is a basic collection of things I do when setting up a new headless ubuntu machine as a webserver. Following the steps below should give you a reasonable secure server with HTTP/2 support (including ALPN in chrome) and the fast NGINX server. I am happy to add things so leave a comment.

Basics

After creating the server (droplet on DigitalOcean) log in with

Serving Flask under a subpath

Your Flask app object implements the __call__ method, which means it can be called like a regular function. When your WSGI container receives a HTTP request it calls your app with the environ dict and the start_response callable. WSGI is specified in PEP 0333. The two relevant environ variables are:

SCRIPT_NAME
The initial portion of the request URL's "path" that corresponds to the application object, so that the application knows its virtual "location". This may be an empty string, if the application corresponds to the "root" of the server.
