Setup nut and netdata on Ubuntu

In this document, I will explain how to setup nut (Network UPS Tools) on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04.

It is basically the next chapter of my previous gist, Upgrade nut on Ubuntu 18.04.

I'll only document USB connected UPS and not the other supported connection modes.

Remote virt-manager from Mac OS

If you have a Linux machine with KVM on it, you can manage those VMs remotely from a Mac using virt-manager.

Step 1: Allow your user non-root access to KVM

SSH to the Linux machine and add your SSH user to the libvirt group

sudo usermod -a -G libvirt $(whoami)

Send Trackpad gestures over Barrier/Synergy using BetterTouchTool

Problem: Controlling a remote Mac desktop using a tool like Barrier or Synergy doesn't allow for trackpad gestures to be sent to the client machine.

Solution: Use Better Touch Tool on host machine to handle the gestures and send a remote command to the client machine.

Steps to setup:

Getting mosh server running on macOS Catalina

Running into this error message when trying to run a mosh server on macOS Catalina? The steps below should solve the problem which is most likely either a $PATH and/or firewall issues.

command not found: mosh-server
Connection to X.X.X.X closed.
/usr/local/bin/mosh: Did not find mosh server startup message. (Have you installed mosh on your server?)

1. Install Mosh

I'm using this page to document experimentation with the new docker bits in Mediawiki core.

How to download, install and run a basic MediaWiki instance, from scratch, using Docker, and wire up PHPStorm debugging

These instructions are intended for someone who has no previous MediaWiki experience, who is interested in getting a basic instance of MediaWiki running on their local machine.

AMD Ryzen "Freezing" Bug on GNU/Linux Systems

Random "Freezing" with AMD Ryzen CPUs

It seems that numerous GNU/Linux users (including myself) have been having issues with the system randomly "freezing" during light usage. From journalctl output and anecdotal accounts, it is speculated that the AMD Ryzen CPUs do not support other C-states for power management very well (at least on GNU/Linux distributions), and the freezing may be resolved by limiting the C-state of the CPU.

Possible Solution

Limiting the C-state of the CPU can be done through the addition of the following kernel boot parameter.

processor.max_cstate=1
