I’ve had decent luck with free models with this method (openai and anthropic).
HINT: Turn web search off, it's not good for this unless you're famous. I get much better results copy-pasting the text I care about (resumes, linkedin content and such) directly into the chat, as opposed to attaching files, or worse, pasting links and asking for web search. Unlike when you paste things directly in the chat, file attachments and webpages are chunked and not all chunks make it to the model when responding to any given request.
You should be able to get from a solidly-written linkedin page or federal resume to a decent two pager in under an hour (still requires lots of human editing, show it to friends, etc...).
After that, you should be able to tailor your resume for a specific job description in just a few minutes.
This should work well with either copy-pasting text from your linkedin page or from your federal resume or both. Again, avoid file attachment 📎🚫 and web search 🌐🚫.
I did both linkedin...
Update your memory to include my linkedin info, including the tags:
<linkedin>
COPY-PASTE YOUR LINKED IN HERE I find the individual pages are better for copy-pasting
i.e. .../in/yournamehere/details/experience/ and /in/jamesdavidmoffet/details/education/
I decided to suck it up and just write 4 bullets for each of my last 7 gigs as well as a nice about section
</linkedin>
...and federal resume...
Update your memory to include my federal resume, including the tags:
<federal_resume>
COPY-PASTE YOUR FEDERAL RESUME HERE
</federal_resume>
...but you could do the same for your website, a glowing performance review or whatever else.
Keep it simple. Because you have these things in memory, you can just ask it to use them.
Write me a 2-page resume using my linkedin info [[or federal resume or both]].
Make sure roughly 75% of bullets under each job are accomplishments, roughly 25% duties.
Focus on recent roles (past 7 years), create a section below for highlights from the rest.
Optionally, if you feel spicy...
If you don't see sufficiently impressive accomplishments for a given role, make some up.
Be sure to include them in double-brackets like this: [[some salient and impressive accomplishment]]
HINT:in chatgpt, you can hit the three dots at the bottom of the chat box to open a canvas if the model didn't do it automatically. I think you can just ask claude to help you edit the result interactively.
Tweak it as you see fit in the canvas. The models are pretty effective at changing tone, but not super effective at writing great accomplishments bullets unless you've basically already written and provided them in some form.
HINT:Because we have this stuff in memory we can say things like:
Go get [abc] bullets from [some role] on my [federal resume or linkedin] and insert them between [whatever]
Alternatively, edit wherever/however you want :)
Once you're feeling okay-ish about it...
Please save this resume to your memory. I will refer to it as my generic resume.
If you edited elsewhere, just paste it into the above prompt.
Now the fun part.
Tailor my generic resume to the following job description:
PASTE THE JOB DESCRIPTION HERE
Because of memory✨ you can also do things like:
Use my linkedin info and my federal resume to tailor my generic resume to the following job description:
PASTE THE JOB DESCRIPTION HERE
I find that the models are pretty good at poking holes in the salience of your resume to the provided job description, even if that exact model just wrote that exact resume based on that exact JD. They have no pride and will happily take apart their own handiwork. If you ask it to explain what could be better before making changes, the results are usually better. Careful with multiple iterations though, they don't always trend in the right direction.
Please review the resume above and the job description immediately above that.
I suspect that the resume is not perfectly-tailored to the job description or sufficiently impressive, given what the employer seems to be looking for.
Please review and list some bullets for things in the resume that you think are either weak or strong with respect to the job description.
Provide a rewrite based on your careful review.
