How to run a python script as a service in Raspberry Pi - Raspbian Jessie

How to Run a Script as a Service in Raspberry Pi - Raspbian Jessie

By: Diego Acuña

Original Article: http://www.diegoacuna.me/how-to-run-a-script-as-a-service-in-raspberry-pi-raspbian-jessie/

A pretty common task when using this device, is to run some script (for example a python script) as a service in the operating system so it can start on boot, stop and restart using systemctl and more. In this post I'm going to explain how to set a little script as a service using Raspbian Jessie in a Raspberry Pi.

Example Python Script

The SVG is easier to style with CSS, and hook JS events to in browser.
python3 -m venv venv

pip install flask matplotlib
python flask_matplotlib.py

Flask nginx gunicorn Raspberry Pi

Python Flask + nginx + gunicorn

Setting up a python flask web application using nginx, gunicorn and systemd on a Rasperry Pi

In the following, we assume a working Flask application with the name of SCRIPT_NAME. First we need to install a couple of things:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Installing nginx will fail if apache is running. If your installation breaks half ways, then remove the fragments, stop apache (and I actually suggest removing it in case not needed) and then install nginx again:

sudo apt-get remove nginx* --purge

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop

FWIW: I (@rondy) am not the creator of the content shared here, which is an excerpt from Edmond Lau's book. I simply copied and pasted it from another location and saved it as a personal note, before it gained popularity on news.ycombinator.com. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the exact origin of the original source, nor was I able to find the author's name, so I am can't provide the appropriate credits.

If you're using SystemJS in the browser, you'll want to update your System config to point at the bundles, if you're not already.

System.config({
  //use typescript for simple compilation (no typechecking)
  //transpiler: 'typescript',
  //typescript compiler options
  //typescriptOptions: {
    //emitDecoratorMetadata: true

Angular2 + JSPM cheat sheet

First time setup

  • install jspm beta: npm install -g jspm@beta
  • set up your project: jspm init
  • install dependencies: jspm install angular2 reflect-metadata zone.js es6-shim

This will create a jspm_packages folder, and a config.js file.

Open the config.js file - this file manages options for the System.js loader - tweak it as appropriate
