Short bio
| |
Raymond "Ray" Kurzweil (Queens, February 12, 1948) is a writter, computer scientist, entrepreneur, inventor and futurist. He has written and has performed in fields like:
| |
| |
Optical Character Recognition;
| |
text-to-speech synthesis;
| |
speech recognition technology;
| |
electronic keyboard instruments;
| |
health and longevity;
| |
transhumanism and futurism;
| |
artificial intelligence (AI).
| |
| |
Kurzweil has received several prizes and twenty honorary doctorates.
| He has founded and co-founded several companies and nowadays is currently Director of Engineering at Google. | |

Relevant ideas and concepts
| |
Apparently, Kurzweil works seem to be erratic and distributed in many fields, but there is a common denominator behind his lifetime work: "pattern recognition". Through pattern recognition Kurzweil has been able to make some difference in many fields of human kwnoledge. Here are some key ideas expressed by the inventor himself in several fields.
Law of accelerating returns
| |
"My core thesis, which I call the law of accelerating returns, is that fundamental measures of information technology follow predictable and exponential trajectories, belying the conventional wisdom that you can’t predict the future" (source)
| |
Singularity and Transhumanism
| |
“We stand on the threshold of the most profound and transformative event in the history of humanity, the 'singularity'.
| |
What is the Singularity? From my perspective, the Singularity is a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so fast and far-reaching that human existence on this planet will be irreversibly altered. We will combine our brain power—the knowledge, skills, and personality quirks that make us human—with our computer power in order to think, reason, communicate, and create in ways we can scarcely even contemplate today.
| |
This merger of man and machine, coupled with the sudden explosion in machine intelligence and rapid innovation in the fields of gene research as well as nanotechnology, will result in a world where there is no distinction between the biological and the mechanical, or between physical and virtual reality. These technological revolutions will allow us to transcend our frail bodies with all their limitations. Illness, as we know it, will be eradicated. Through the use of nanotechnology, we will be able to manufacture almost any physical product upon demand, world hunger and poverty will be solved, and pollution will vanish. Human existence will undergo a quantum leap in evolution. We will be able to live as long as we choose. The coming into being of such a world is, in essence, the Singularity.”(source)
| |
Hybrid thinking
| |
In the Ted Talk below, Kurzweil suggests we should get ready for the next big leap in brain power.

Predictions
| |
Ray Kurzweil is well known for his scientific predictions about the future of mankind. The first accomplished predictions in his 1990's book "The Age of Intelligent Machines" were the demise of the Soviet Union and that computers would beat the best human players around 2002 (IBM's Deep blue beat Garry Kasparov in 1997).
| |
In The Age of Spiritual Machines", Kurzweil made 147 predictions for 2009 and, according to the author, 78% of these predictions were correct as of the end of 2009, and another 8% were “essentially correct” (a prediction was considered “essentially correct” if it came true in 2010 or 2011), 12% were partially correct, and 2% were wrong. The predictions were made in the following diverse areas such: computers, education, disabilities, communication business and economics, politics & society, arts, warfare, health & medicine and philosophy. Some accomplished predictions are the following:
| |
| |
"Portable computers will have become dramatically lighter and thinner than the notebook computers of ten years earlier".
| |
"Digital objects such as books, music albums, movies, and software are rapidly distributed as data files through the wireless network, and typically do not have a physical object associated with them".
| |
"Learning at a distance (e.g., lectures and seminars in which the participants are geographically scattered) is commonplace".
| |
Students with reading disabilities routinely ameliorate their disability using print-to-speech reading systems".
| |
“Telephone” communication is primarily wireless".
| |
"At least half of all [business] transactions are conducted on-line".
| |
"China has also emerged as a powerful economic player".
| |
| |
Forbes contributor Alex Knapp made an article on 12 predictions for 2009 made by Kurzweil in 1999, saying that just 25% of his sample predictions were accomplished. Kurzweil answer accused Knapp's critics of being biased and idiosyncratic. A complete and commented Kurzweil review of his predictions can be read on "How My Predictions Are Faring", a paper the author wrote in October 2010.
| |
