# So, this blew up on both Reddit and Twitter. Two bugs fixed (southern Spain was a mess,
# and some countries where missing -- measure twice, submit once, damnit), and two silly superflous lines removed after
# @hadleywickham pointed that out. Also, switched from geom_segment to geom_line.

A face-detection script in Python

This face-boxer.py script is more-or-less the same code that you'll find in the OpenCV tutorial: Face Detection using Haar Cascades. For another variation, with more explanation, check out RealPython's tutorial.

Usage

The face-boxer.py script is designed to be run from the command-line. It has two required arugments:

  1. The path to a XML file containing a Haar-cascade of visual features. In this example, it will be the features that make up a face.
  2. The path to an image file that you want to perform face-detection on. You can pass in more than one image file as space-separated arguments.
import sys, cv2
# Refactored https://realpython.com/blog/python/face-recognition-with-python/
def cascade_detect(cascade, image):
gray_image = cv2.cvtColor(image, cv2.COLOR_BGR2GRAY)
return cascade.detectMultiScale(
gray_image,
scaleFactor = 1.15,
minNeighbors = 5,

Quick-and-dirty Instagram web scrape, just in case you don't think you should have to make your users log in to deliver them public photos.
<?php
//returns a big old hunk of JSON from a non-private IG account page.
function scrape_insta($username) {
$insta_source = file_get_contents('http://instagram.com/'.$username);
$shards = explode('window._sharedData = ', $insta_source);
$insta_json = explode(';</script>', $shards[1]);
$insta_array = json_decode($insta_json[0], TRUE);
return $insta_array;
}
