| ## WHAT IS IT? | |
| The Three Sisters prototype models the phenomenon of companion planting, an agricultural practice in which a farmer installs plants in a configuration such that each plant benefits the other plants in some way, and all work together to increase overall yield. | |
| In a real-world Three Sisters garden: | |
| Maize provides a trellis for beans to climb | |
| Squash (here, pumpkins) provide shade that limits weed growth | |
| Beans fix nitrogen in their roots, fertilizing the soil for the next year's planting | |
| The Three Sisters is structured as a game in which users try "score" by producing calories. They set a goal and try to beat that goal. In order to raise their score, they must begin to approximate the optimal configuration of a true Three Sisters garden, which is to interplant pumpkins with maize/bean pairs so that the beans can easily reach the maize trellis. | |
| ## HOW IT WORKS | |
| Maize, beans, and pumpkins each grow where the user has planted them. The "seeds" for each are turtles (one each for beans and pumpkins, six for maize) and additional turtles are sprouted to grow roots. | |
| The maize turtles move straight up in a sequence of six increasing distances, then turn to grow leaves left and right. As these turtles grow, they invisibly change the color of the patches underneath them. | |
| The bean turtles favor horizontal movement unless they detect a re-colored maize patch, in which case they "grab on" and turn vertically. | |
| The pumpkin turtles grow pumpkins of various sizes; the patch where they are planted deters eliminates weeds. | |
| Weeds sprout randomly unless they detect pumpkins nearby, in which case they die. | |
| Roots grow randomly around a 180-degree arc. | |
| ## HOW TO USE IT | |
| Click "start a new garden" to set up the soil and sky. | |
| Click "grow one year" to see what happens if you don't plant seeds. | |
| Click "start a new garden" after each trial to reset. | |
| Click "plant maize," "plant beans," or "plant pumpkins"; click in the soil to plant them, then click "grow one year." Alternatively, click "plant randomly." | |

| ## EXTENDING THE MODEL | |
| Only the beans act as true agents in this simulation. They seek out the trellis and climb if they can latch on. | |
| A second planting year should be added to show the effect of bean roots in the soil. | |
| Weeds are only deterred by "brute force" -- the pumpkins just cause them to disappear. The mechanism for this should be that the pumpkins shade the weeds (block light-turtles from getting through and nourishing them). | |
| Nitrogen is not yet modeled. Atmospheric nitrogen-turtles should float randomly, be drawn into the bean plants, travel to their roots, and increase growth rates in the second year. | |
| The growth rate of maize and the other plants should be variable with sunlight, rain, and nitrogen. | |
| ## NETLOGO FEATURES | |
| The intent here was in part to create a visually appealing environment for younger learners. The maize was drawn through sequentially launching turtles and then drawing circle-segments of progressively shorter lengths and larger arcs. | |
| ## RELATED MODELS | |
| The Three Sisters model tries to approach visual fidelity (albeit abstracted) to its real-world referent, similar to the models Climate Change and Autumn. | |
