Installing Microsoft Office in Linux

Step by step guide: How to install Microsoft Office in any Linux distribution

There are multiple options how to install MS Office on Linux.

VM-based - Integrate Windows apps running in a Windows virtual machine as native-looking in Linux

  1. LinOffice - Microsoft Office Launcher for Linux, my own fork of Winapps which is focused on only running Microsoft Office, with some Office-specific improvements over Winapps and a fully automated setup. Eventually I would like to create a GUI for it. Decribed below
  2. Winapps, based on KVM, QEMU, Docker/Podman and FreeRDP. Still actively maintained (getting Github commits). Decribed below
  3. Cassowary, based on KVM, QEMU, libvirt/virt-manager, and FreeRDP. Last release in Feb 2022 and seems to be abandoned.

Waifu Diffusion 1.4 Overview

An image generated at resolution 512x512 then upscaled to 1024x1024 with Waifu Diffusion 1.3 Epoch 7.

Goals

  • Improving image generation at different aspect ratios using conditional masking during training. This will allow for the entire image to be seen during training instead of center cropped images, which will allow for better results when generating full body images, portraits, and improving the composition.
  • Expanded the input context from 77 tokens to 231 tokens or perhaps to an unlimited amount of tokens. Out of 77 tokens for input, only 75 are useable. This does not give nearly enough room for complex prompting that requires a lot of detail.

A tutorial to use GUI in WSL2 replacing original XServer by Xvnc, allowing WSL to work like native Linux, including login screen

WSL2 with GUI using Xvnc

Note

If you want to use pure WSLg, you can try the new WSLg (XWayland) tutorial or the WSLg (Wayland) tutorial.

In this tutorial, we will setup GUI in WSL2, and access it using VNC. No additional software outside WSL (like VcXsrv) is required, except, of course, a VNC Viewer (RealVNC, TightVNC, TigerVNC, UVNC, etc, all of them might work flawlessly).

The key component we need to install is the desktop metapackage you want (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Budgie, etc) and tigervnc-standalone-server.

For this setup, I will use Ubuntu (20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 are working), and install GNOME Desktop. Since the key components aren't bound to Ubuntu or GNOME, you can use your favorite distro and GUI. Check the [Sample

How to automount an external vhdx file in WSL2

Using a .vhdx file from another partition/disk in WSL2

  1. Ubuntu WSL2 must be already installed in C: system drive and user should be able to call windows binaries like wsl.exe from bash.

  2. We will install Alpine WSL2 distro in an external partition/disk:

How to create an HTTPS certificate for localhost domains

This focuses on generating the certificates for loading local virtual hosts hosted on your computer, for development only.

Do not use self-signed certificates in production ! For online certificates, use Let's Encrypt instead (tutorial).
